Terms of Service

Welcome to Opening Night. By creating an account or otherwise using the app, you agree to these Terms of Service ("Terms"). If you do not agree, please do not use the service.
1. The Service
Opening Night is a social fantasy game in which you and friends draft upcoming theatrical films and compete based on publicly reported box office grosses across a season. The service is offered for entertainment only. No prizes or payouts are issued by us. Real box office figures are sourced from third parties and may be revised, delayed, or unavailable.
2. Eligibility
You must be at least 13 years old (or the minimum age in your jurisdiction that permits independent use of online services without parental consent) to create an account.
3. Your Account
- You're responsible for the activity that happens under your account. Keep your sign-in credentials safe.
- Display names, avatars, and any content you submit must not be illegal, deceptive, infringing, harassing, or otherwise objectionable.
- We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these Terms or that we reasonably believe pose a risk to the service or other users.
4. Acceptable Use
You agree not to:
- Reverse-engineer, decompile, or attempt to extract source code from the app, except where permitted by law.
- Use automated means to interact with the service, scrape data, or create accounts.
- Interfere with or disrupt the service, attempt to access accounts or data you are not authorised to access, or upload malicious code.
- Use the service to harass, threaten, or impersonate any person.
Reporting and enforcement. You can report an objectionable display name, league name, or other user content from within the app — open the player's profile or the league's settings screen and tap "Report." You can also email support@openingnight.net directly. We review reports within 48 hours. Depending on severity, we may reset a display name or league name to a neutral value, remove the offending content, suspend the responsible account, or permanently terminate it. Repeat or severe violations (illegal content, threats, targeted harassment) result in immediate termination.
5. Leagues and User Content
League names, draft outcomes, and other gameplay data are visible to members of the same league. You grant us a limited, non-exclusive licence to host, store, and display the content you submit solely to operate the service. You retain ownership of your content.
6. Third-Party Data
Film metadata is provided by The Movie Database (TMDB). Box-office figures are read from third-party public box-office data sources. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or certified by these providers. Data may be incomplete, delayed, or inaccurate; we provide it on an as-available basis.
7. AI-Generated Content
When a league enables weekly recaps, summaries of that week's gameplay are generated by Google's Gemini AI and shown to league members. AI-generated text is provided "as is" and may contain inaccuracies, mischaracterisations, or errors not present in the underlying gameplay data. Recaps are intended for entertainment and should not be relied upon as a record of events. See the Privacy Policy for what data is shared with Google to generate them.
8. No Wagering
Opening Night does not offer real-money wagering, gambling, or paid contests. League play is for fun.
9. Termination
You may delete your account at any time from Profile › Manage Account. We may suspend or terminate access to the service at any time, with or without notice, for any violation of these Terms or for other lawful reasons.
10. Disclaimers
The service is provided "as is" and "as available," without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We do not warrant that the service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that data will be accurate or timely.
11. Limitation of Liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, in no event will Opening Night, its operators, or its suppliers be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for any loss of profits, revenues, data, or goodwill, arising out of or in connection with your use of the service. Our aggregate liability for any claim related to the service is limited to USD $50.
12. Changes
We may update these Terms from time to time. We will update the "Last updated" date above and, for material changes, notify you in the app. Continued use after changes take effect constitutes acceptance.
13. Governing Law
These Terms are governed by the laws of the jurisdiction in which the service operator resides, without regard to conflict-of-laws principles. You and we agree to bring any dispute exclusively in the courts of that jurisdiction.
