Privacy Policy
Last updated: May 30, 2026
Opening Night ("the app," "we," "us") is a fantasy box-office game for friend groups. This policy explains what data we collect, why, and what choices you have. We collect the minimum needed to run the service and do not sell your data.
1. Information We Collect
When you create an account and use the app, we collect:
- Account identifiers — your email address (required for sign-in) and a display name you choose.
- Authentication tokens — when you sign in with Apple or Google, we receive the identifier those providers return so we can recognise you on subsequent sessions. We do not receive your password.
- Profile photo (optional) — if you upload an avatar, the image is stored in our backend storage. You can change or remove it at any time from the Profile screen.
- Push notification token (optional) — if you allow notifications, your device's push token is stored so we can send weekly recaps, draft reminders, and milestone alerts.
- Gameplay data — the leagues you create or join (including the league name), your nominations, bids, drafted films, and resulting standings.
- AI-generated recaps (optional, per-league) — when a league commissioner enables weekly recaps, a summary of that week's gameplay (league name, player display names, movie titles, bid amounts, and box-office figures) is sent to Google's Gemini API to generate the written recap. The generated text is stored on our backend and shown to league members. We do not send your email, phone, account identifier, device identifier, or any data from other leagues.
2. How We Use Your Information
- To create and authenticate your account.
- To run drafts and compute standings across the season.
- To send notifications you've opted into (draft reminders, weekly recaps, milestone events). Preferences are managed in Profile › Notification Preferences.
- To respond to support requests you send us.
3. Third-Party Services
- Supabase — our backend provider (authentication, database, storage, realtime, push delivery).
- TMDB — we query The Movie Database for film metadata, posters, and trailers. This product uses the TMDB API but is not endorsed or certified by TMDB.
- Box-office data — public weekly and daily box-office figures are read from third-party box-office data sources to compute standings. We are not affiliated with those sources or with any studio.
- Apple / Google — when you sign in with Apple or Google, those providers handle the credential exchange under their own privacy policies.
- Expo — used for app delivery and over-the-air updates.
- Sentry — receives crash reports and diagnostic logs when the app encounters an unexpected error, tagged with your account identifier so we can deduplicate reports. Sentry does not receive your email, name, gameplay data, or any browsing history. Used solely to fix bugs.
- Google (Gemini) — when a league enables weekly recaps, the data described in §1 ("AI-generated recaps") is sent to Google's Gemini API to produce the written recap. Google processes this data under its API terms; we do not use it for model training. Leagues without recaps enabled never send data to Google.
4. Analytics & Tracking
Opening Night does not include advertising trackers and does not track you across other apps or websites. We use Sentry for crash diagnostics (see §3 above) — it is configured to receive crashes and diagnostic breadcrumbs only, not behavioural analytics.
5. Data Sharing
We do not sell your personal data. Within a league you've joined, other members can see your display name, avatar, nominations, bids, drafted films, and standings — that's the game. We do not share account data with other parties except as required to operate the services listed above or to comply with law.
6. Data Retention
Account and gameplay data is retained for as long as your account is active. When you delete your account from Profile › Manage Account, your profile, league memberships, and draft history are permanently removed. Leagues you commissioned are archived for the remaining members.
7. Children
Opening Night is not directed at children under 13 (or the applicable minimum age in your jurisdiction). We do not knowingly collect data from children. If you believe a child has created an account, please contact us so we can remove it.
8. Your Choices
- Edit your profile — change your display name or avatar at any time on the Profile screen.
- Control notifications — toggle categories in Profile › Notification Preferences, or disable notifications system-wide in your device settings.
- Delete your account — Profile › Manage Account › Delete my account. This is irreversible.
9. Security
All data is transmitted over TLS (HTTPS). Passwords (for email sign-ins) are hashed by Supabase and never visible to us. We follow reasonable practices to protect data, but no system is perfectly secure.
10. Changes to This Policy
If we materially change how data is collected or used, we will update the "Last updated" date above and, where appropriate, notify you in the app.
